This document is meant to be a helpful guide and does not replace the ABCCAP Exam Manual. Please read the manual thoroughly. If there are any discrepancies between this guide and the manual, the manual takes precedence. Please reach out to your mentor or Sunnye Mayes, PhD, ABPP (practice sample reviewer) at sunnyem@med.umich.edu with questions.
- Coverage of Foundational Competencies: Practice samples must address the foundational competencies of Intervention, Assessment, and Consultation.
- A video sample must be provided for at least one of these areas.
- For each video sample submitted, be sure to include a written contextual/reflective statement (1000-1500 words), additional relevant supporting materials (e.g., handouts provided), and a de-identified copy of the chart note and/or assessment report (if relevant). See pages 64-72 in the exam manual for criteria to include in the statement.
- If a video sample is not submitted for any of the 3 foundational competencies, you need to include a written sample summary of the competency area (no more than 5 pages – not included in the 15 page limit for the professional statement). Please also submit relevant supporting materials (e.g., de-identified assessment protocols, handouts, etc.). De-identified chart notes are not necessary for this sample.
- Candidates typically need to submit two practice samples with Practice samples for competency domains of Research/Evaluation, Management/Administration, or Advocacy do not require video samples, but if submitting one from these areas the other sample must be either Intervention, Assessment, or Consultation and must include a video. In these instances, written samples of the other two foundational competencies must be included within the overall submission.
- For the video samples, one video must be Intervention, Assessment, or Consultation and the other video can be from another competency. Candidates cannot submit two videos of the same competency. All practice samples must address Intervention, Consultation, and Assessment within overall materials.
For example,
- Video 1 = Assessment; Video 2 = Intervention; Consultation is discussed within Professional Statement supplemental materials.
- Video 1 = Intervention; Video 2 = Teaching; Consultation and Assessment are discussed within Professional Statement supplemental materials.
- Video 1 = Consultation; Video 2 = Supervision; Assessment and Intervention are discussed within Professional Statement supplemental materials.
- Guidelines for videos:
- Each video should be approximately 45-50 minutes, but it is fine to compile unedited short sessions together (these should be from the same patient, so that additional contextual/reflective materials are not needed).
- Longer unedited videos may included, with guidance to which times in the video should be considered for the practice sample review. The total time should be approximately 50 minutes.
- Good audio and video quality are essential. Each video should be accompanied by a written contextual/reflective statement (1000 – 1500 words) and supporting materials. Candidates cannot use the same client for both practice samples.
- If submitting videos from Zoom, be mindful de-identifying display names and you may need to prompt your client’s family to do this prior to starting the recording.
- For Intervention, in the contextual/reflective statement/written summary make sure you have de-identified the patient/client. If a video was submitted, make sure you have secured and documented consent for the video. Be sure to include the session note and any supporting materials (e.g., handouts, worksheets).
- For Assessment, in the contextual/reflective statement/written summary, make sure you have de-identified the patient/client, including month and day of birth. If a video was submitted, make sure you secured and documented consent for the video. Be sure to include the de-identified report and completed testing protocols/testing data or measures as supporting materials.
- For Consultation, in the contextual/reflective statement/written summary make sure you have de-identified the patient client. If a video was submitted, make sure that you have secured and documented consent. Be sure to identify the consultation model used. Please note that the “consultee” must be another professional (e.g., pediatrician, teacher, speech therapist). A patient/client cannot be the consultee.
